"George
Crosley"
According
to Alger Hiss, "George Crosley" was the pseudonym
Whittaker Chambers
used when they met.
Chambers told HUAC he had never used the name,
but at the trials in 1949, Chambers conceded
he might have done so. For more information
about two people who backed Hiss's recollections
on the issue, see the entries for Samuel
Roth and Cleide
Catlett.
According
to Chambers, Hiss knew him as "Carl"
(no last name), one of the many pseudonyms Chambers
acknowledged using. Other known Chambers' aliases
included: Charles Adams, Bob, David Breen, Lloyd
Cantwell, David Chambers, Arthur Dwyer, Hugh
Jones, John Kelly, Harold Phillips and Charles
Whittaker.
